Buy marigold seeds: sunny, versatile and easy to maintain

Marigolds (Calendula officinalis) are loved for their cheerful orange hues and easy care. They not only provide aesthetic pleasure, but also contribute to a healthier soil and biodiverse garden. In this article you will discover why these plants are so valuable, how to sow and care for them effectively, and which marigold seeds from the Plukkers collection are perfect for your garden.

Why choose marigolds?

Marigolds are low-maintenance and bloom from June to October. They attract bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, which stimulates biodiversity in your garden. Their scent and roots help to inhibit fungal diseases and nematodes, making them a smart natural protection in vegetable gardens or borders. The flowers are also edible: you can use them as a flavouring, in salads or as a colour accent in drinks.

Sowing and care in steps

  1. When to sow — sow indoors from March/April for an early start, or outdoors immediately after frost in May. Alternatively sow in September for an early harvest next spring.
  2. Sowing — scatter seeds on slightly moist soil, cover with max. 1 cm of soil, and keep the top layer moist. Germination takes 7–14 days.
  3. Prick out and transplant — When plants have two true leaves, transplant them 20cm apart in full sun. Good drainage and humus-rich soil encourage strong growth.
  4. Water and feed — water especially during dry spells. A light dusting of compost during the season will prolong flowering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new blooms.
  5. Harvesting seeds — let some flowers dry out and collect the seeds for another round. Dry them on paper in a cool place; this way you can sow again every year.

Practical use in your garden

Marigolds add structure and colour to borders, flowerbeds or pots. Their strong scent acts as a natural defence against certain pests. In the vegetable garden, plant them as interplanting – they promote healthy growth in the neighbourhood. Combine them with herbs, zinnias and salvia for a lively, ecological assortment.
