Introduction to carrot seeds
Carrot seeds are a great starting point for a bountiful harvest in your vegetable garden. Carrots are not only incredibly easy to grow, they're also one of the most versatile vegetables you can add to your garden. They thrive in a variety of soil types and you can harvest them almost year-round, depending on the variety you choose. Carrots from your own garden always taste better than those from the supermarket. Carrots are packed with vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, and C, and contain beneficial minerals like calcium and potassium. These nutrients promote healthy skin, strong bones, and a strong immune system. Carrots can take 10 to 16 weeks to be ready to harvest, depending on the variety. Whether you're just starting to garden or have been enjoying your garden for years, carrots are a vegetable that's always worth sowing and harvesting.
Why grow carrots?
Carrots are the ideal starter vegetable. Growing them is simple: sow them directly in the ground, ensure good soil quality, and follow a few simple steps for a successful harvest. We recommend sowing carrots sparingly to prevent problems and avoid damaging the roots. When sowing carrot seeds, it's important to read the instructions on the packaging. You'll have few pest problems and, after a few months, you'll harvest a crunchy, deliciously sweet treat, especially when eaten raw or in a salad. Carrots are also delicious in salads. And with the right variety, you can sow them almost year-round.
The benefits:
- Wide choice of sizes and colours
- Long storage life, especially winter varieties
- Healthy, crunchy and rich in vitamin A
- Easy to combine in crop rotation
- Also suitable for pots or raised beds
- Easy to plant together with other vegetables, herbs and flowers
- Grows best in a spot with plenty of sunlight
- Good care for the plants ensures an optimal harvest
- Keep the plot weed-free to prevent competition for water and nutrients
- Roots require a planting distance of 20x3 cm or 20x5 cm depending on the type
Organic carrot seeds
When you choose organic carrot seeds, you're choosing a healthy and natural vegetable garden that delivers truly pure flavor. These seeds are grown without chemical pesticides and fertilizers, making them not only better for your garden but also for your health. However, too much fresh manure can lead to hairy or branched roots. We offer various types of organic carrot seeds, such as the early 'Napoli F1' and the hardy 'Negovia F1' for late summer and autumn cultivation. Sow summer carrots from April to August and winter carrots from April or May. Harvest the carrots before the first frost; winter carrots can overwinter in the open ground. With these organic seeds, you'll not only get a burst of flavor from your own garden but also contribute to richer soil and a healthier living environment around your home. Organic carrot seeds are simply a conscious choice for anyone who enjoys harvesting pure, delicious produce from their own vegetable garden.
Preparing the soil
Proper soil preparation is truly the secret to beautiful carrots you'll harvest. Carrots are actually a bit finicky—they love a nice, loose, airy soil without pebbles or clumps, so they can grow straight and evenly. Grab your garden fork and thoroughly loosen the soil, removing any obstacles you encounter. Then, sprinkle a nice layer of compost on top to nourish the soil and give growth an extra boost. I always find that carrots really appreciate it when you give them enough space to grow deep and thick. This lays the foundation for a delicious harvest of healthy, sweet carrots you can be proud of. Enjoy gardening!

Sowing tips for carrots in open ground
- Sowing depth: 1–2 cm
- Spacing: 2–3 cm between seeds, 20 cm between rows. Don't sow the seeds too close together; if you sow them too close together, the roots can crowd each other and not grow well. Therefore, ensure sufficient distance between the seeds.
- Sowing season: February–July (depending on variety). Sowing is best done during the months with the best conditions for root growth, usually spring.
- Location: sunny, loose and stone-free soil
- Water: Especially during germination and dry spells. Keep the soil constantly slightly moist, especially in the first few weeks after sowing.
- Tip: Cover the seedbeds with insect netting immediately after emergence to prevent carrot fly.
- Tip: Thin out the young plants so that the remaining root plants have enough room to continue growing.
Harvesting carrots
Harvesting carrots is truly one of the most enjoyable moments in your vegetable garden—a wonderful moment you've been looking forward to for months! With a little patience, after a few months you can enjoy crisp, freshly harvested carrots that are so much tastier than store-bought. The best time to harvest is when your carrots are 2 to 3 centimeters in diameter and the foliage is still nice and firm and green. Gently pull the carrots out of the ground by the foliage—take it easy, so they don't break or damage them. Sometimes it's helpful to moisten the soil first; this makes them much easier to loosen (and you don't have to pull so hard). After harvesting, it's best to store the carrots in a cool, dark place, such as a cellar or shed. This way they'll stay wonderfully fresh for a long time, and you can enjoy your own harvest for weeks to come—what a wonderful feeling!
Roots with character
Whether you're looking for a rainbow of colors, a plump winter carrot, or a small snack carrot, you'll find the right seed at Plukkers. Because carrots are never boring – if you sow them yourself.
