Apple tree 'Cox's Orange Pippin'

Low stem 80cm high - 5 litre pot. The Cox's Orange Pippin apple tree is a classic English variety renowned for its aromatic, sweet and sour apples with an orange-red blush. This medium sized tree prefers well-drained, fertile soil and a sunny, sheltered spot to thrive. The apples, prized for their complex flavour and juicy texture, are ideal for fresh consumption, baking and cider production. The tree flowers in spring with delicate pink-white flowers. Prune in winter to improve air circulation and prevent disease. Cox's Orange Pippin is not self-pollinating; cross-pollination with varieties such as James Grieve or Elstar is necessary for a good harvest.

Low stem means that the tree is grafted onto a slow growing rootstock, which means that the trees bear fruit faster and grow less tall. The advantages of this are that they are suitable for smaller (vegetable) gardens, so that you can grow more varieties in the same space. It is also handy that you can harvest easily, safely and without a long ladder.

In the fall, the soil is still warm and moist, which means the trees will take root well in the soil. Plants that are planted in the fall have a better developed root system than plants that are planted in the spring. They will also grow better and can better withstand periods of drought. Because the trees are delivered in pots, they can be planted all year round.
