Beefsteak tomato 'Coeur de Boeuf' BIO

The heart-shaped 'Coeur de Boeuf' tomato is a fast-growing beef tomato and develops large fruits around 500 grams. The ideal flavouring for pastas and soups. One bag is for approximately 2.5m2, and the planting distance is 90x50 cm.

Beefsteak tomato 'Coeur de Boeuf' is a very popular variety. It grows quickly and develops large to very large heart-shaped fruits. This is also reflected in the Dutch popular name 'Ossenhart'.

This traditional tomato variety with a rich Italian history ripens from the inside out. It is therefore best to pick it when the large fruit is just starting to get a colour. It is then pink on the inside and the flesh is still nice and firm. With its fresh, full flavour, 'Coeur de Boeuf' is ideal for salads when freshly picked. The fruit is completely ripe and red, with soft and particularly tasty flesh. The ideal flavouring for pastas and soups. Sliced very thinly, this beef tomato is becoming increasingly popular as 'Coeur de Boeuf carpaccio'. The oxheart tomato also sets the tone in many other vegetarian or vegan dishes.

The variety produces an average of 5 fruits per bunch. For a balanced development of the plant, it is better to reduce this to 2 tomatoes per bunch. Remove the flowers from the bunch during flowering so that 2 flowers remain. The weight of the fruits is around 500 grams, but peaks of up to 1000 grams are certainly possible.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
