Are you looking for a special type of fruit for your garden or vegetable garden? Get to know the tayberry , a unique cross between the raspberry and the blackberry. This fruit is not only surprisingly tasty, but also easy to grow yourself. In this article you can read everything about the tayberry plant , from planting to harvest. We discuss how to plant, cut, prune a tayberry and where you can buy quality tayberry plants .
What is a tayberry?
The tayberry is a fruit that originated from a cross between a raspberry ( Rubus idaeus ) and a blackberry ( Rubus fruticosus ). The result is an elongated, deep pink to purple fruit that is larger than a raspberry and softer than a blackberry. The taste is intensely sweet with a light acidity – perfect for fresh consumption, jam, pastries and even liqueur. I (Ruud) also often add it to my kombucha.
The tayberry grows on a hardy shrub with long, flexible branches that need support. The plant flowers in spring and produces a bountiful harvest in summer.
I grow my tayberries along 4 horizontal wires. The first wire I stretch at 50 cm high and then each time half a meter higher.

Planting Tayberry: How to Give Your Plant the Perfect Start
Planting Tayberry in your vegetable garden is best done in spring (March-April) or autumn (October-November). The plant likes sun and well-drained, nutritious soil.
Tayberry planting step-by-step plan:
-
Choose a sunny spot – partial shade is also possible, but will produce slightly less fruit.
Provide structure – use a trellis or tensioned wire to guide the branches.
Planting distance – keep at least 80 cm between plants.
Soil improvement – enrich the soil with compost or organic fertilizer.
Watering – provide ample water immediately after planting.
A tayberry grows quickly and often produces a good yield in the second year.
