General information
Acolon is a modern blue grape variety developed in 1971 at the State Institute for Viticulture in Weinsberg (Württemberg) through a cross between Lemberger × Dornfelder. It combines the early ripening and deep color of Dornfelder with the fine tannin structure and fruitiness of Lemberger. Acolon is primarily grown in Baden-Württemberg and the Palatinate, where it excels both solo and in blends.

Grape
The bunches are medium to large and usually loose-fitting. The berries are round and have a thin skin, making them vulnerable to birds and wasps. The open bunch structure limits the risk of mold.

Wine
Acolon produces wines with intense color, high must weight, and good extract value. The aromas are fruity and ripe, with notes of cherry, plum, and blackcurrant. Thanks to its soft tannins and rich body, it is suitable for barrel aging and makes an excellent blending partner for other red grape varieties.

Cultivation advice
The plant grows vigorously and matures early. Acolon is suitable for various locations, but due to its susceptibility to rot in dense plantings or damp conditions, an airy, open location is preferred. A later, well-ventilated location helps prevent damage in the fall.

Preparing the vine
The growth is vigorous and requires regular pruning and training. The grapevine responds well to trellises and produces a reliable yield with proper care.

Ground preparation

• On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
• On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
