Parsnip Growing Guide

Sow parsnip seeds in early to late spring when the soil begins to warm up. They are best sown directly into the ground. Sow the seeds in rows and thin out a few weeks later if necessary.

How to sow parsnips?

Parsnips can be a bit temperamental when it comes to germination. They are slow germinators. You proceed in the same way as you would sow carrots.

It is important that parsnips are grown in soil that drains well and is free of stones. You can prepare your soil with a Spade fork so that you get nice straight tines.

When to harvest parsnips?

Parsnips like a good frost, so if you can leave them until they get some cold, they will develop a sweet flavour. Keep your seedbed free of weeds all season long. Parsnips store very well. Place them in a cool dark place, buried in sand. Happy sowing!
