Leek seed: tiny black seeds
When to sow leeks?
Leeks can be sown from January to the end of April, depending on the variety. There are four types of cultivation: summer cultivation, early autumn cultivation, late autumn cultivation, and winter cultivation. Depending on when you want to harvest your leeks, you choose the cultivation method. Choose the appropriate leek seed based on the cultivation method.
These are the 3 most popular types of leek seeds:
Leek 'Swiss Giants' - summer-early autumn
Leek 'Herfstreuzen Hannibal' BIO
Leek seeds take about 10 to 12 days to germinate and prefer a temperature between 8°C and 22°C.
The easiest way to sow leeks is by pre-sowing them in P9 pots. If you sow your leeks in January and February, it's best to use a propagator or grow light to provide your emerging seeds with sufficient high-quality light. This will give your seeds a good start.
When your leek plants are about the thickness of a pencil, you can plant them out in a well-prepared vegetable garden bed.
Protect your planted leek plants from the leek fly with high-quality insect netting.
