Summer vetch - Green manure BIO

Green manure Summer vetch is a fast-growing green manure that creates a lot of plant mass. This nitrogen binder loosens the soil nicely thanks to its strong rooting. One bag is for approximately 7 m2 and the planting distance is 15x5 cm.

Summer vetch is an annual, fast-growing green manure that creates a lot of plant mass. Vetch is a papilionaceous plant (Leguminose). These richly flowering crops are very important for bees and other pollinating insects. These plants can also absorb nitrogen from the air and loosen the soil nicely due to their strong rooting. The crop dies in the winter. Summer vetch does not cover the soil completely, which means that sowing this green manure does not sufficiently suppress the development of weeds. However, this can be solved by mixing in other seeds, such as sunflowers or winter rye. Summer vetch also feels at home in mixtures. A good example is vetch with Japanese oats. These two species complement each other in terms of their use of nitrogen. Together they ensure that extra nitrogen is available for the next crop.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
