Sauvignon Blanc vine on SO4 rootstock

General information about vine variety Sauvignon Blanc :

Sauvignon Blanc is a success story that has gone around the wine world and has become one of the 20 most important grape varieties in viticulture. Its origins lie in the French Loire region with its famous appellations “Sancerre” and “Pouilly -Fumé”. The winemakers stand for the style of straightforward and lighter, mineral and spicy wines from cool fermentation, often also in wooden barrels. Producers in the cooler regions of New Zealand, Chile and South Africa have adapted this style and pushed it towards full-bodied, vegetal wines. The variety is also suitable for making dessert wines and has helped the “Sauternes” and “Graves” regions in Bordeaux to world fame. In the Palatinate, the variety has been indigenous for over twenty years and, thanks to the northern climate, it makes a great variety of vinifications possible.

Grape :

The grapes of the Sauvignon Blanc vine are small and compact, partly shouldered. The round, small berries have a golden yellow color when fully ripe.

Wine :

The variety contains an infinite variety of wine styles. They range from wines cold fermented in steel tanks and reductively fermented with the aromas of blackcurrant, kiwi, gooseberry, grass, elderflower to exotic attributes of passion fruit, lychee and grapefruit when later harvested and matured in wooden barrels.

Growing advice for Sauvignon Blanc vine :

Due to the strong growth and the susceptibility to botrytis on very fertile, wet places, lighter soils and drier places should be chosen. Depending on the location, the slight tendency to failure to flower, which is typical for this species, can be an advantage. The variety has a relatively thick skin. However, as the physiological ripeness increases, the risk of botrytis increases in the compact grapes. Good aeration of the grape zone is conducive to optimal use of the harvest period.

Preparation of vine variety Sauvignon Blanc:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine:

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
