Chicory growing set: growing tray with approximately 50 chicory roots

With this chicory growing kit, you can bring the joy of the vegetable garden right into your home. Everything you need to grow your own chicory (or endive) is included: a sturdy growing tray and a bag of about fifty chicory roots.

The roots have already completed their cold period and are ready to get started. Trim some foliage, place the roots in the container with some seed and cutting mix (easily ordered), and water occasionally. Place the container in a cool, dark place and wait a few weeks; then the first fresh, crisp endive heads will appear straight from your own container!

Whether you're just starting out with gardening or have had a green thumb for years, this chicory growing kit will make it almost impossible not to get excited. It's simple, delicious, and incredibly fun to do.

The propagator will hold about fifty roots, but fewer is also fine. This gives your chicory some extra room to grow. Store any roots you're not using yet in a cool, dark, and airy place. This way they remain perfect for a second round of chicory.

Frequently asked questions about growing chicory (or endive)

Growing your own chicory sometimes raises some questions, especially when it comes to the roots. Don't worry, below you'll find answers to the most common questions from other pickers.

  • Can I store the chicory roots?
Yes, that's possible. Store them in a cool, slightly damp place, for example, in the cellar or refrigerator. Preferably, place them in damp sand or wrap them in a damp cloth. This way, the roots will keep for several weeks and are ready to sprout into fresh, crisp chicory.
  • There are thick, thin, long, and short carrots in the bag. Is that correct?
Absolutely, that's exactly how it should be. The shape of the root doesn't matter. Thick, thin, long, or short roots can all form a beautiful, firm, and delicious head of chicory.
  • Help, my roots are rotten or slimy!
Don't panic, that's actually a good sign. To grow high-quality chicory, the roots are refrigerated for two weeks after harvesting. We've already done that for you. This causes the foliage still attached to the root to die back and may become a bit slimy. Before planting, all you need to do is trim the foliage and remove the dead leaves. In the photos, you see roots that have already been neatly trimmed. This is completely normal and won't affect your harvest in any way.
  • How many times can I harvest from one carrot?
Each root produces one head of chicory. After harvest, no new heads will grow. Want to try the root again? Feel free to. You'll get individual leaves instead of a dense head, and they'll still taste delicious.
  • Help, my chicory won't grow!
This is often due to too much heat or light. Keep the roots in a cool, dark, and slightly moist place, and they'll naturally improve. Use nutrient-poor soil instead of potting mix, as too much nitrogen causes loose heads.

How do you grow chicory?

Before planting the roots, trim the foliage to about two to three centimeters and remove any dead leaves. The photos show chicory roots that have already been neatly trimmed.

Then place the roots upright in a container or bucket and sprinkle a thin layer of soil between them. You don't need to cover the top of these roots. You can grow them with or without topsoil, whichever you prefer. Keep the soil slightly moist and provide a dark spot. After a few weeks, you'll be harvesting your own crispy endive or chicory.
