Nematodes against slugs (No-slug)
Are your young plants being eaten? Then you probably have slugs. Especially in the early, usually wet spring, the slugs are looking for food. After a long hibernation, they come out of the ground en masse. Are you going crazy because the young plants don't even get a chance to grow? Then No-slug is something for you! Do you want to know how No-slug works? We explain it to you in detail here.
What is No-slug?
No-slug is a biological pesticide based on Phasmarhabditis californica nematodes. These nematodes work together with specific bacteria that are deadly to slugs.
How does it work?
- The nematodes actively search for snails in the soil and enter through natural openings such as the mouth and anus.
- Once inside, they secrete bacteria that infect the snail.
- Within a few days the snail stops eating, develops a swelling on its back and dies.
-
The nematodes develop further in the dead snail body and go in search of new prey.
Within two weeks most slugs die underground. No-slug is suitable for use in gardens, ornamental gardens, greenhouses, flower boxes and compost heaps.
The nematodes work for 6 weeks to clear your slug population in the soil. After these 6 weeks, the nematode activity is inhibited by naturally occurring predatory nematodes and parasitic fungi in the soil.
- Combat slugs in your garden
- Apply February - October
- Apply from a soil temperature of 6°C

Benefits of No-slug
Benefits of No-slug
- No residue and no resistance.
- No danger to humans, animals (such as hedgehogs that eat snails) or the environment
- 100% natural, organic product
- Clears the slug population in the ground. 90% of slugs live in the ground. Those that come to eat above ground only comprise a small percentage of the slugs present in your soil. To win the battle against slugs, it is essential that you tackle them at the source. That is what No-slug does.
- Also to combat snails in vegetable garden boxes
Disadvantages of No-slug
Disadvantages of No-slug
The nematodes only give a visible result after two weeks. The nematodes start working immediately and infect the snails, a few days after application the first snails die. No-slug does not work like snail pellets where the snails die immediately when they eat it. Due to the large population of snails in the ground, the nematodes need some time to combat the population. Only then will you see few snails above ground.
How to use the nematodes
How to use the nematodes
- Always treat entire borders or strips in the garden. There is no point in just pouring some nematode solution around each plant. The snails are spread out in the soil and by only pouring around the plants, you give far too few nematodes per m² to have an effect.
- Remove bark or wood chips in the ornamental garden before applying nematodes. Nematodes must be able to penetrate the subsoil. After treatment, the bark can be replaced.
- Make sure the soil is moist before watering the nematodes. If necessary, water first.
- Dissolve nematodes in water and then dilute according to the surface to be treated. Use the nematodes immediately, they cannot be stored in solution.
- Pour or spray the mixture over the affected soil with our nematode sprayer. Do not apply in the sun. Rinse with clean water if there are already many plants so that all nematodes can penetrate the soil. Nematodes are not harmful to the plants.
- Keep the soil moist for at least 2 weeks. Using No-slug during a humid period is ideal.
- No-slug remains active for 6 weeks if the conditions are right: moist soil and min. 6 °C soil temperature. If you still see insufficient results after the first treatment, this means that you had a lot of slugs and you should repeat the treatment.
A comprehensive manual is always included with the product, or watch the video for instructions.
Spraying nematodes
Spraying nematodes
If you want to treat a large surface with nematodes, it saves a lot of work to use the nematode sprayer . The Rootsum nematode sprayer simply clicks onto the garden hose. You make your nematode mixture with the enclosed manual, pour it into the reservoir and you can start spraying. The nematodes are added to the water in the correct ratio.
When to combat snails with nematodes?
When to combat snails with nematodes?
You can combat snails from March to October. The soil (not the air temperature) must be at least 6 °C. You may not pour nematodes on frozen ground. The best soil temperature for using nematodes is 15 °C, we reach this temperature on average at the end of April - May.
TIP : to avoid having problems with slugs in early spring, you can also opt to treat between the end of August and the end of September. Slugs that are killed in the fall will not be able to lay hundreds of eggs in the spring. In addition, the soil temperature in September is ideal for nematodes. This way, you will have less feeding damage in the early, cold spring when you cannot yet use No-slug.
Nematodes against snails
Nematodes against snails
First of all, it should be said that snails do not cause nearly as much damage as slugs. They are often wrongly accused of snail eating. Snails are always above ground, often on plant leaves where they feed on waste and micro-organisms in addition to plant material. They are therefore important cleaners. Slugs often emerge at night, so we do not see them eating the leaves.
Snails do not live in the ground. If you pour No-slug on the ground against snails, they will only become infected if they move over the treated ground. The effect of nematodes on snails is therefore limited.
No-slug storage
No-slug storage
No-slug and other nematodes are living organisms and can only be stored for a short time at 5°C in the refrigerator. It is best to order No-slug just before you want to use it.
Overdosing on nematodes?
Overdosing on nematodes?
By the way, overdosing nematodes is not a problem at all. By spreading more nematodes on a (much) smaller surface, you will see results faster. With an overdose of nematodes, the snail population is killed faster. Do you have a snail plague? Then we even recommend that you release more nematodes per m2.
