Naan bread is my go-to when I want to bake something quickly with little effort. A handful of ingredients, a frying pan, and fifteen minutes of actual work—that's all you need. I prefer pairing it with Greek dishes or a hearty chicken tikka masala, but honestly, it goes with almost everything. Once you've baked this yourself, you'll never buy it at the supermarket again.

Frequently asked questions about baking naan bread:

What flour should I use for naan bread?

Regular T65 wheat flour is the base for this recipe. Self-raising flour works as an alternative; if you use it, omit the baking powder. Looking for a more nutritious version? Replace part of the flour with whole wheat flour. The dough will be slightly firmer but will remain supple and delicious and soft after baking.

Do I have to use yogurt?

Yes, yogurt is essential for the soft, airy texture of homemade naan bread. Full-fat yogurt gives the best results. Greek yogurt also works perfectly and adds a slightly richer flavor. Lactose-intolerant? Use lactose-free yogurt as an alternative.

How do I knead naan bread dough?

Turn the dough out onto a floured work surface and knead it firmly for 5 minutes until smooth and supple. Alternatively, use a kitchen machine with a dough hook. The dough is ready when it feels elastic and no longer sticks to your hands. Place it in a large bowl, cover it, and let it rest at room temperature for at least 1 hour.

Does naan bread rise during the resting time?

Naan bread does not rise like yeast dough. There is no yeast in this recipe. However, the resting time is essential. The gluten relaxes, making the dough easier to roll out and resulting in softer, airier naan bread after baking. Do not skip this step.

How do I bake naan bread in a frying pan?

Heat a dry frying pan over medium-high heat without oil or butter. Bake each piece of naan bread for 2 to 3 minutes per side until it puffs up and shows brown spots. Cover the baked naan breads with a tea towel while you bake the rest to keep them soft and warm. A hot pan is the key to a great result.

How can I add extra flavor to naan bread?

Brush the baked naan breads with melted butter or garlic butter for a richer flavor. Make garlic butter by mixing a pressed clove of garlic with melted butter and finely chopped cilantro or parsley. Sprinkle with a pinch of salt and fresh herbs on top. You can also experiment with a little oil or herb-infused oil instead of butter.

What should I serve with naan bread?

Naan bread is the perfect side dish for Indian dishes like curry or chicken tikka masala, ideal for dipping into the sauce. It also pairs well with Greek dishes, soups, or just plain right out of the pan. Divide into smaller portions and serve in a basket at the table as a bread side.

Can I make naan bread in advance?

Yes. Make the dough, cover the bowl, and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Let the dough come to room temperature for 15 minutes before rolling out and baking. Baked naan breads can be stored at room temperature under a clean tea towel for up to 1 day.

      Can I freeze naan bread?

Yes. Let the baked naan breads cool completely. Freeze them with a sheet of parchment paper between each naan so they don't stick together. Reheat directly in a hot frying pan without oil for 1 to 2 minutes per side. They will taste like freshly baked naan bread.

How do I divide the dough evenly?

Weigh the dough and divide it into equal portions using a dough cutter. Roll each piece into a tight ball before rolling it out with a rolling pin. This ensures your naan breads are the same size and cook evenly in the pan.
