This hazel grows compact and is ideal for smaller gardens. The nuts have a rich, full flavor and are perfect for snacks or culinary applications. The Halle'sche Riesen thrives in fertile, well-drained soil and needs a sunny to semi-shaded location. This tree is self-pollinating, but a second hazel nearby can improve the harvest. Regular pruning to maintain shape and promote health is recommended. Harvest the nuts in September-October for best quality and flavor.
In the fall, the soil is still warm and moist, which means the trees will take root well in the soil. Plants that are planted in the fall have a better developed root system than plants that are planted in the spring. They will also grow better and can better withstand periods of drought.
