General information about vine variety Regent :

The Regent is the pioneer crop with which the Institut für Rebenzüchtung Geilweilerhof in Siebeldingen heralded a revival in vine breeding and viticulture in 1967. The fungal diseases powdery mildew and downy mildew increasingly posed the challenge for winegrowers to achieve a high-quality and reliable harvest. The crossing of classic vinifera varieties with so-called interspecific varieties, in whose genetics a natural tolerance to fungi is anchored, brought the Piwis to the attention of experts. They can reduce the amount of crop protection agents needed in viticulture by around 60 to 80%. Regent is a cross between (Silvaner x Müller-Thurgau) and Chambourcin. It is grown in Rheinhessen, the Palatinate and Baden on an area of ​​around 2,000 ha. Smaller populations have also been recorded in England, the Benelux countries and Switzerland.

Grape :

Typical are elongated bunches that are loosely filled with medium-sized, round, blue-colored berries.

Wine :

Regent is characterized by deep and tannic red wines, especially after a longer maceration period, and is a winner when matured in wooden barrels. With true aromas of ripe plums, cherries and red pepper, Regent is close to Merlot.

Growing advice for Regent vine :

Maturity is reached relatively early, from September onwards. The variety shows a medium-strong, upright growth with little shoot formation. The variety is well resistant to winter frost. It is somewhat sensitive to chlorosis on wet and cold or very calcareous soil. The choice of the right rootstock is very important here.

Preparation of vine variety Regent :

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine:

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
