General information about vine variety Pinot Meunier :

With its world-famous namesake, Schwarzriesling has only the growth, the late ripening and the shape of the grape in common. Its affinity with the Burgundy family is undisputed. In France, the variety is known as “Pinot Meunier” and is an integral part of many Champagne cuvées. The French “Pinot Meunier” has been cultivated for 400 years and can also be found in the vineyards of Austria as Blaue Postitschtraube and in Germany synonymously as Müllerrebe.

Grape :

The grape bunches of the Pinot Meunier vine are medium-sized and densely covered with small, roundish oval berries with a black-blue berry skin.

Wine :

On the nose, Pinot Meunier is reminiscent of early cherries, red berries and ripe plums. The body is delicate with a strong acidity and a discreet Pinot Noir aroma, which is why the wines are often used as a base component of champagne or sparkling wines.

Cultivation advice :

The variety is resistant to May frosts thanks to its late budding. The characteristic woolly texture of the buds provides an insulating layer of warmth. The late flowering also reduces the risk of drizzle, which means a safe yield with, however, often compact grapes.

Preparation of vine variety Pinot Meunier:

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine :

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
