Solaris vine on SO4 rootstock (Piwi - resistant)

General information about the vine variety Solaris :

The Solaris variety originated in 1975 from the assortment of Norbert Becker, Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg. The cross combination is Merzling with “Gm 6493”, in whose genetics Muskat-Ottonel is anchored. The name refers to the excellent ripening characteristics of the variety. Early ripening and a high sugar content are typical for the “Sonnenfänger”. Colleagues in Baden have also succeeded in making highly valued dessert wines from the Solaris.

Grape

The grapes of the Solaris vine are medium-sized, amber-colored when ripe and not very compact.

Resistance variety Solaris

Peronospora: +++ Mildew or Oidium:+++ Botrytis: ++

Wine

The wines are full-bodied with fruity, finely integrated acids. A pronounced fruitiness of quince, mirabelle, almond and caramel can be achieved by maceration and cool fermentation.

Cultivation advice

The requirements for the location are low with very good frost resistance. The variety ripens very early. Selection qualities at the beginning of September are not uncommon. This should be taken into account when choosing the location. High altitudes or later, more northerly locations are advantageous. Characteristic is a strong, horizontal growth, which should be taken into account in the guidance system and the foliage, in order to guarantee good drying of the grape zone.

Preparing to plant out Solaris vine

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your Solaris vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
