Before planting the roots, trim the foliage to about two to three centimeters and remove any dead leaves. The photos show chicory roots that have already been neatly trimmed.
Then place the roots upright in a container or bucket and sprinkle a thin layer of soil between them. You don't need to cover the top of these roots. You can grow them with or without topsoil, whichever you prefer. Keep the soil slightly moist and provide a dark spot. After a few weeks, you'll be harvesting your own crispy endive or chicory.
