General information
Gamay (also known as Gamay Noir) is a classic red grape variety best known from the Beaujolais region of France. Related to Pinot Noir, it is known for its light, fruity wines with floral notes. Gamay thrives in temperate climates and has also been successfully cultivated outside France, including in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The grape ripens early, making it well-suited for cooler regions.

Grape
The bunches are medium-sized, conical, and compact. Sometimes they are shouldered. The berries are blackish-blue, medium-sized, oval, and firm. They contain white, juicy flesh with a mild, sweet flavor.

  • Peronospora (downy mildew): +
  • Oidium (powdery mildew): +
  • Botrytis (gray mold): +/−

Wine
Gamay produces a bright red wine with a light body and fresh acidity. The aroma is reminiscent of cherries, red berries, and sometimes ripe plums. The palate is elegant and accessible with soft tannins. Gamay wines are popular as a light summer wine but also age surprisingly well. They pair beautifully with a wide variety of dishes—even fish.

Cultivation advice
Gamay has moderate growth vigor and produces regularly. Due to its late budding, the variety is relatively resistant to spring frost. However, its compact clusters do make it susceptible to mold in wet summers. Therefore, choose a well-ventilated location on lighter soil.

Preparing the vine
The growth is compact and manageable. Gamay adapts well to a trellis structure or a classic espalier. Regular leaf-pruning helps keep the grapes airy and prevents mold.

Ground preparation

  • On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
  • On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.

Planting distance

  • In line: 1 meter
  • Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
