General information
Satin Noir was created in 1991 by Valentin Blattner and is a cross between Cabernet Sauvignon and resistant partners. The variety shows a clear genetic affinity to Cabernet Sauvignon. Its characteristics include thick skins, small, concentrated, aromatic, and colorful berries, and a loose grape structure. It ripens approximately 10 to 14 days before the classic variety, ensuring an early and reliable harvest in a ripe, harmonious Cabernet style.

Grape
The bunches are short, with loose berries and few shoulders. The berries are round and about the same size as those of Cabernet Sauvignon. The firm skin offers good natural resistance to botrytis. The rich pigments in the skins give the grape its deep, dark appearance.

Resistance

  • Peronospora (downy mildew): +++
  • Oidium (powdery mildew): +++
  • Botrytis (gray mold): ++

Wine
Satin Noir has a deep, dense red color. Its aroma and flavor are reminiscent of a very ripe Cabernet Franc, with aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, black pepper, and dark chocolate, along with subtle hints of cigar, leather, and cedar. The wine is powerful and structured, with ageing potential and ideal for oak aging.

Cultivation advice
The growth is very upright, which requires less effort for foliage work. The loose foliage provides natural ventilation of the grapevine—ideal in humid regions, without the need for additional defoliation. The grapes ripen approximately 10–14 days before Cabernet Sauvignon, usually in early to mid-October. Thanks to good botrytis resistance, the harvest period can be extended without loss of quality.

Preparing the vine
The plant grows vigorously and produces few to no double shoots. Its sturdy structure makes pruning and yield control easy. The yield is medium to high and remains manageable.

Ground preparation

  • On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
  • On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.

Planting distance

  • In line: 1 meter
  • Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
