Plum moth pheromone
The pheromone is infused with the scent females emit to attract males. Therefore, the pheromone is species-specific. You cannot attract a fruit moth with a pheromone.
The males, attracted by the female sex pheromone, fly toward the scent and land on the adhesive plate. One pheromone capsule is effective for six weeks. After that, the pheromone capsule must be replaced with a new one.
What does the pheromone trap do?
A pheromone trap is a tool for monitoring and controlling harmful plum moths. The more males are captured, the fewer females can be fertilized. Less fertilization leads to fewer egg layings and therefore fewer harmful caterpillars.
This method only truly offers protection once the harmful moth population has been reduced. Because fewer or even no moths are flying around your area, the damage becomes minimal or even nonexistent. In the first few years, you'll catch a lot of moths and can still experience significant damage. Over time, you'll catch fewer and achieve increasingly better results.
Thanks to the pheromone trap, you'll know exactly when the plum moth starts its flight. If you want to spray a product against plum moth, you can do so much more effectively thanks to this monitoring.
When to hang out the pheromone trap?
The pheromone trap should be hung before the plum moth starts its flight and until the end of the flight.
Due to global warming, the period between flight start and end dates is much further apart than it was 10 years ago.
Therefore, we recommend hanging the trap from mid-April and leaving it until the end of September if you have late plums. You can purchase additional pheromone capsules separately.
Can I hang a pheromone trap later than mid-April?
Absolutely! The plum moth has two generations per year and flies continuously until the end of September. So it's definitely worth hanging a pheromone trap during this period. Next year, you'll want to hang the trap from mid-April.
How many traps should I hang?
Hang one trap for every five low-stemmed fruit trees. The fruit trees must be located within a 25-meter radius of the trap. For mature high-stemmed trees, hang one pheromone trap per tree or per two trees, depending on the infection pressure.
Hanging too many traps isn't good. So never hang multiple traps in one tree. This attracts a massive number of moths, but they won't find the traps because the pheromone scent is so prevalent.
Where is the plum moth pheromone trap hung?
Hang the trap on the side of the tree, out of the wind but in an airy spot. Ideally, hang the pheromone trap perpendicular to the wind, this way the scent spreads more evenly and you avoid catching too many flies.
Definitely do not hang under dense foliage; this will prevent the pheromone scent from spreading properly.
Storing pheromone capsules
Store the pheromone capsule in a sealed container in the freezer to maximize the pheromone scent. You can use pheromone capsules stored in the freezer the year of purchase and the following year. Never store pheromone capsules at room temperature for extended periods, as this will cause the pheromone to lose its effectiveness.
Our pheromone capsules are freshly produced annually. Each capsule is individually wrapped and stored in a freezer until shipped. This allows us to 100% guarantee the high quality of our pheromones.
I have late plums, what now?
This "deltaval plum moth" package contains two pheromone capsules. This is sufficient to trap the plum moth for 12 weeks. For late-season plums, purchase two additional pheromone capsules.
Buy pheromones separately
Since the delta trap can easily be used for three years, you can purchase the adhesive bases and pheromone capsules separately in our webshop.
