A-quality asparagus plants for the cultivation of white asparagus

The Grolim asparagus variety is an excellent choice for both fertile sandy soil and medium-heavy (loose) clay soil. This variety is known for its early spring harvest and produces thick, easy-to-peel asparagus spears with a delicious flavor. Grolim thrives in full sun and thrives in well-drained soil. Grolim asparagus is best grown as white asparagus . This variety was specifically bred for white asparagus cultivation because of its thick, straight stems, which are ideal for growing underground and then being harvested. Covering the asparagus in ridges or beds with soil protects them from sunlight, keeping them white.

Cultivation information:

  • No harvest in the first year, so that the plant can use its energy to grow strong.
  • In the second year you can harvest one asparagus stalk per plant.
  • In the 3rd year you can harvest a limited amount, for example once a week per plant.
  • From the 4th year you can harvest abundantly until mid-June.

Location and soil type
Grolim thrives in deep, well-drained sandy and clay soils. The plants do not like wet feet; the groundwater should be at least 20 cm below the surface, although temporary winter watering is not a problem.

How many plants are needed for a weekly meal per person?
For a family of four (2 adults and 2 children), 10 plants are enough for a harvest from April to June 21st. This means 7 to 8 weeks of fresh asparagus enjoyment.

Do you still want green asparagus?
You can also grow Grolim without covering it. The stems will then absorb sunlight and turn green, although the variety is slightly less suitable for green asparagus cultivation due to the strong focus on white asparagus in breeding. Other varieties like Prius and Xenolim are more suitable for green asparagus, but it is possible with Grolim!

Storing asparagus claws

Asparagus claws are best planted out immediately upon receipt. If you can't do it right away, store them in the refrigerator, shed or cellar at around 4ºC to prevent them from sprouting. Leave them in the bag to prevent them from drying out. They can be stored for a maximum of 7-10 days before planting them out.

Want to keep them longer? Take them out of the bag and put them in a sealed bucket with slightly moist sowing or cutting soil. Be careful: not too wet, because then they will rot. The sooner they are planted, the better! Want to know more about planting? Read our blog or watch our video .
