Pumpkin 'Zappalito' BIO

The 'Zappalito' pumpkin should be harvested and eaten when young and unripe. The green fruits of this variety have a diameter of approximately 10 to 12 cm. One bag is for approximately 5m2, and the planting distance is 75x75 cm.

Pumpkin Zappalito is a non-vining summer squash. The green fruits should be harvested and consumed at a young, unripe stage. Plant out more closely, 1 plant per 0.8 m². The green fruits of the Zappalito have a diameter of 10 to 12 cm. Grows on any well-fertilized soil.

Sow warmly under glass in late April/early May, do not water too much during germination. Watch out for mice, because they love pumpkin seeds. Once the seeds have germinated, this is no longer a problem. Plant outside after approx. 3 weeks.

Sowing on site is possible in May, provided it is warm enough to ensure rapid germination. Sow 2 seeds per sowing location, 3 to 4 cm deep. Leave one plant standing after emergence. Mice can also spoil your fun outside. You can take preventive action by placing a flower pot upside down on the sowing location immediately after sowing. Remove the pots after a week!

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
