Standard pea 'Kelvedon Wonder' BIO

Kelvedon Wonder' is a standard pea that does not require support from wire mesh. This variety is hardly affected by diseases or pests and is therefore very attractive. Pre-sowing is possible as early as February. One bag is for approximately 5 m2, and the planting distance is 50x5 cm.

Stem pea 'Kelvedon Wonder' is a sweet wrinkled stem type (no support of mesh required). Problems with diseases and pests are few. Length approx. 70 cm. Pre-sowing in a pot or seed tray is possible as early as February and then planting out in the open ground in March at a planting distance of 50x5 cm. You can also sow directly in the open ground in the months of March and April at the same planting distance. The harvest period is from June to July. Problems with diseases and pests are few and that makes it all the more attractive to grow peas yourself. When growing peas, you can suffice with little fertilizer. Two main groups can be distinguished: short with a length of up to approx. 70 cm (stem) and long types (rice types). The stem varieties can in principle be grown without support, but cultivation along (short) wire mesh or with brushwood also has advantages here: picking is considerably easier and there are no pods on the ground. A common row distance for stem types is 50 cm, sow in the row at 5 cm. In connection with mice and birds, sow sufficiently deep (3 to 4 cm). For all capuchins, peas and pods, early sowing (March/April) yields the best results; sowing in May and later yields insufficient pod setting and problems with mildew.

Saving seeds

Store seeds in a cool, dry and dark place, such as a sealed box in a cupboard. Pay attention to the expiration date on the packaging and use them before that time. If the packaging has been opened, make sure it is sealed properly and check the germination capacity before use.

You can easily test the germination capacity of seeds with a germination test :

  1. Place a few seeds (for example 10) on a damp piece of kitchen paper.
  2. Fold the paper towel closed and place it in a plastic bag or place it in a sealed container.
  3. Place it in a warm place, such as on the windowsill.
  4. After a few days, check to see if the seeds have started to germinate.
