General information about vine variety Monarch :

Monarch is a mold-resistant red wine variety that was first bred in 1988. It was crossed from the Solaris and Dornfelder varieties at the State Institute for Viticulture in Freiburg by Norbert Becker. The name Monarch is intended to emphasize the “noble” character of the grape variety

Grape :

The berries and bunches of the Monarch vine are medium sized. The grapes are very resistant to (downy) mildew. Average resistance to botrytis.

Wine :

Wine from the Monarch grape has an intense red colour and its aroma is reminiscent of strawberries and raspberries. In taste it is reminiscent of Pinot Noir, with a rich and fruity flavour, rich in tannins, with a clear hint of red berries. Monarch is used as a single-variety wine, but also in blends with fruity red wines from other varieties.

Preparation of Monarch vine :

Put your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This way it can suckle itself full again before planting out.

Ground preparation :

You can improve your soil with lava grit (if lime soil) or with bentonite and lava flour (if sandy soil).

Planting out a grapevine:

Make a hole with a diameter of 10 cm and +/- 30 cm deep with a ground drill or spade. And plant the vine with the graft just above the ground. The vine may come out of the ground between 5 and 10 cm. Plant your vines between May 1 and May 15 and leave 1 meter between the plants and 1.5 to 1.8 meters between the rows.
