General information
Voltis is a promising new variety developed to be resistant to both forms of mildew: downy mildew (peronospora) and powdery mildew (oidium). Since August 2021, Voltis has been permitted in France for up to 5% of professional Champagne vineyards, making it the first resistant grape variety officially permitted within an AOC* specification. This makes Voltis attractive not only to professional winemakers but also to organic amateur gardeners.
Grape
Voltis grapes are medium-sized and grow in airy bunches. They ripen moderately early. They are particularly suitable for producing fresh, slightly aromatic white wines.
Resistance
- Peronospora (downy mildew): +++
- Oidium (powdery mildew): +++
- Botrytis (gray mold): ++
- Black rot: sensitive
Wine
Voltis produces fresh, light white wines with soft acidity. The aromas are subtle and refined, with notes of citrus and white flowers. Thanks to its balance and elegance, Voltis is now also appreciated in blends with classic grape varieties.
Cultivation advice
Voltis grows moderately vigorously and upright, with orderly shoot development. This grape is ideal for those who want to grow with minimal crop protection. When choosing a location, keep its susceptibility to black rot in mind: an airy, well-drained site helps prevent infection. Ripening occurs around late September to early October.
Preparing the vine
The plant grows compactly and exhibits few double shoots. Pruning and training are easy. Voltis has an average yield that is easily manageable without intensive labor.
Ground preparation
- On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
- On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour
Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.
Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
Planting distance
- In line: 1 meter
- Between rows: 1.5 to 1.8 meters
