General information
Muscaris is a fungus-resistant white grape variety bred in 1987 by Norbert Becker at the State Institute for Viticulture in Freiburg. The cross between Solaris and Muskateller combines the early ripening and robustness of Solaris with the distinct Muscat profile of Muskateller. The goal was to develop an aromatic grape suitable for cooler climates, with a lower risk of botrytis and lower acidity than classic Muscat varieties.

Grape
The bunches are medium to large and can vary from loose to compact, depending on the location. The berries are greenish-yellow, medium-sized, and have a thick skin, which provides protection against mold and insects.

Wine
The name says it all: Muscaris produces wines with an intense muscat aroma, framed by tropical fruits like lychee, mango, and pineapple. On the palate, the wine is juicy, with a fresh, pleasant acidity and a subtle spiciness. Its aromatic power makes it suitable for dry to slightly sweet wines.

Cultivation advice
Muscaris is frost-hardy and ripens around the same time as Müller-Thurgau. It grows well in moderate to good locations and is not very demanding regarding soil. A stronger rootstock is recommended for poorer soil. Avoid locations at risk of May frost due to its early emergence. In wet years, be vigilant against stem rot.

Preparing the vine
Growth is manageable. Ideally, choose a well-aerated location to prevent stem rot. The grapevine responds well to training on wire trellis or poles.

Ground preparation

• On calcareous soil: improve with lava grit
• On sandy soil: improve with bentonite and lava flour

Planting out
Soak your vine in a bucket of water for 24 hours. This allows it to soak up some water before planting.

Plant between May 1st and 15th. Use a soil auger or spade to dig a planting hole 10 cm in diameter and 30 cm deep. Insert the graft just above the ground, so that the vine protrudes 5 to 10 cm above the ground.
